His uncle, of the same name bought land here as early as 1740. We first hear of him in New Salem in 1759 when he had a small estate but he probably came here as a small boy with his father's family in 1739, on of the first arrivals. He was Captain of a New Salem company of the April 19th Minutemen and served honorably in Col. ______ Regiment. The stories to the contrary, probably printed in the Barre Gazette, two generations later, were myths invented by overzealous descendants of Stacy. The plague in New Salem based on that myth should be destroyed along with all the other myths promulgated on the hill. He was probably in Capt. Howe's company in 1755. Gidean Clark of Northampton was his guardian after his father's death.

He came here from Hadley about 1742 or earlier and was extensively involved in land speculation in the new grants hereabouts. He stayed here the rest of his life and must have been an important link between the Salem people and Hampshire County. His three polls in 1759 must have included his twin sons Samuel and William. Ezekiel, Sr. had a brother, Ebenezer in Amherst. If Ezekiel Sr. had any military command over New Salem's French War fortifications, as reputed, it has escaped this researcher. (The site of this fortification is actually unknown. The person who placed the historic marker on Blueberry Hill, had no more idea of the actual location than the reader.) "Of Hadley - Feb. 4, 1741/42; lived on First Div.# 25 and/or #24 and #26.

He probably lived here as a boy with his father's family but was apprenticed to Dr. Richard Crouch of Hadley, who was his aunt's husband. He graduated from Harvard in 1751. Forbes Library has only volumes 2 and 3 of the Crouch-Kellogg account books in the Judd Collection. Crouch died in 1761 and Giles inherited the practice. He continued to give a great many of the frightful contemporary medicines, bled extravagantly and charged enormous prices for his herbal concoctions. He lived eccentrically and his personal life was scandalous by Hadley 18th Century standards. When he came (by horseback) from Hadley to attend New Salem's sick, he stayed with his relatives here. He and Robert Stone of old Salem had half interests in one Right of the New Salem Propriety.
