Quimby/Quinby

Quimby Coat of Arms

The name we bear comes from the English word queen together with the word bye, the latter meaning village - we have it yet in use as a part of the word byway, which was a village road, leading to the highway. In England, the word survives in the term bye-election. In short, Quinby or Queen-bye, is a word formed the same way as were Princeton and Kingston or King's town, and the place from which our English ancestor got his surname in the thirteenth century.

The early Quinby given-names of Norman-French origin and the continuous use of the French particle de show that our ancestral line was Norman-French and came over to England as a part of the troops of William the Conqueror in the eleventh century.

According to the several books on which the above is taken from, there are various spellings of the Quinby/Quimby surnames - these examples include:
De Quenby, Quynby, Qwenbye, Quinbee, Quinby and Quimby
.
