Captain John S. Coney - Text taken from Gloucester Daily Times:
Captain John S. Coney, for many years a master mariner from this port, passed away last evening at the home of his daughter, at 53 Florence Street, Wollaston, death resulting from a shock. He had been visiting here for the fisherman's races where he was greeted by many former friends.
Captain Coney was born in Pico, Azore Islands, 74 years ago, being the son of Joseph and Vincencia Coney. He came to this city when a young man and followed the fisheries. He married Mary L. Williams, since deceased, and leaves two sons, George, of Greenport, Long Island; and John S. Coney, Jr. of Kenosha, Wisconsin, also two daughters, Mrs. Mary (May) F., wife of Louis F. Dewsnap of Wollaston and Mrs. Vincencia, wife of Joseph Cox of East Boston. He also leaves three grandchildren and a brother, Captain Frank Cooney of Rockport, as well as a sister, Mrs. Mary C. Perry, of this city. (see below)
Captain Coney will be recalled by many waterfront habitués as master of the ill-fated schooner, Leader, which went ashore some 35 years ago at Norman's Woe, off Magnolia, with a loss of several of her crew. The impressive services for the victims, and a requiem high mass at the old Church of Our Lady of Good Voyage, will also bring back memories of that event to many of the older citizens.
He was a member of the Acoriana Relief Association of this city also of the Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Good Voyage church as well as of the Holy Name Society of a Wisconsin parish.
Captain Coney retired from active participation in the fisheries some 20 years ago and had since traveled extensively through the West and other parts of the country. He had been with his daughter, Mrs. Dewsnap at her Wollaston home only about three weeks. The remains will be brought here for interment.
(Mary C. Perry was taken ill the same day and died, then brother and sister were buried together)
Mrs. Antone Perry: Text of Gloucester Daily Times, 10 September 1929:
DOUBLE FUNERAL FOR BROTHER AND SISTER
Taken ill at her home at about the same hour that her brother, Captain John S. Coney (sic), died at his home in Wollaston, Mrs. Antone Perry of 14 Marchant street, died last evening at 5:30 o'clock as her brother's remains were being brought into this city for funeral services.
Mrs. Perry had been in poor health for about a year and a half, but had been about on Saturday, until evening when she was taken ill and failed to rally. She was born in Pico, Azore Islands, being the daughter of the late Joseph and Vincencia Cooney. She had resided in this city, residing on Perkins street. She married Antone Perry, by whom she is survived with a daughter, Mrs. Mary E., wife of Roderick Beaton. She also leaves three grand-daughters, Mrs. Evelyn, wife of Edmund Rumowicz, Mrs. Eleanor, wife of Joseph S. Mitchell, and Mrs. Marguerite, wife of Russell W. Dickerson, all of this city, as well as a brother, Captain Frank Cooney of Rockport.
The deceased was a member of the Daughters of the Twentieth Century, and of the Sisters of the Portuguese Fraternity. She was a faithful attendant at Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, and after the first church was destroyed by fire, she became a most ardent worker for funds for its restoration. Until her health failed, she had been one of the most enthusiastic church supporters and aided without stint in all of its many projects. Mrs. Perry was highly esteemed in this city and especially among the ward two residents, where she had for so many years been a familiar figure.
Arrangements have been made for a joint funeral for the brother and sister from the Portuguese church Thursday.
