Saint Monica

(Patron Saint of Mothers & Wives)

C. 332 - 387

"Bury my body anywhere; it does not matter. Do not let that disturb you. This only I ask - that you remember me at the altar of God wherever you may be."

- St. Monica to her sons as she lay dying far from home

Patience, Endurance, Charity, Prayer and Conversion

These five words where so much the life of St. Monica.

Patience - The waiting must have been terrible for St. Monica who watched her son, St. Augustine drift into paganism and eventually come back to the Catholic faith.

Endurance - Having to marry a cruel, pagan man whom she didn't know or love. Knowing that she must obey her parents and there choice for her suitor.

Charity - She had been taught to love the poor and the suffering, and to serve them at her own expense and inconvenience, and the service of others makes one unselfish. She showed this charity to her servants and to her aging mother-in-law who was a very controlling woman.

Prayer - The unceasing prayers of St. Monica helped many including her husband, Patricius; his mother, her children - Navigius, Perpetua and her eldest son, Augustine. Never underestimate the power of prayer.

Conversion - Her constant prayers and intercessions brought about the conversions of her mother-in-law, her husband and finally her son, Augustine; who came back to the faith and was baptized at the age of 33 by St. Ambrose.

Prayers Of St. Monica

To you I fly for aid and for instructions, St. Monica, wondrous exemplar of unswerving prayer for children. Into your loving arms I place my (child) children _______, that through your powerful intercession they may obtain the graces for genuine conversion to Christ Our Lord. To you I also humbly appeal, matron of matrons, to ask our Lord to grant me the same spirit of ceaseless prayer He granted to you. All this I ask through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.

O God, Who observed the devout tears and pleading of St. Monica and granted to her prayers the conversion of her husband and the penitential return of her son, Augustine, grant us the grace to implore Thee also with earnest zeal, so that we may obtain, as she did, the salvation of our own soul and the souls of those belonging to us. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

O holy Monica, by your patience and prayers you obtained from God the conversion of your husband and the grace to live in peace with him; obtain for us, we beseech you, the blessing of Almighty God, so that true harmony and peace may reign also in our homes, and that all the members of our families may attain eternal life. Amen.

O holy Monica, by your burning tears and unceasing prayers you saved your son from eternal damnation. Obtain for us the grace ever to comprehend what is most conducive to the salvation of our children, so that we may effectively restrain them from sin and lead them by virtue and piety to Heaven! Amen.

In your mercy, Lord, you received the tears of St. Monica as she wept for her son. At the intercession of both mother and son, give us grace to weep for sin and to obtain Your Forgiveness. Amen.

Exemplary Mother of the great Augustine, you perseveringly pursued your wayward son not with wild threats but with prayerful cries to heaven. Intercede for all mothers in our day so that they may learn to draw their children to God. Teach them how to remain close to their children, even the prodigal sons and daughters who have sadly gone astray. Amen.

St. Monica, pray for us and for our children. (This to follow the rest of the litany)

Model of wives,

You who converted your unbelieving husband, Mother of St. Augustine,

Strict and prudent teacher, guardian of your son in all his ways,

You who carefully watched over his conduct,

You who were sorely distressed at his erring from the right,

You who were untiring in your petitions for his soul's safety,

You who still hoped on amid the bitterness of your heart and your floods of tears,

You who were filled with consolation upon his return to God,

You who died calmly after faithfully fulfilling your duties,

You who are the prayerful intercessor of all mothers who pray and weep as you did,

Preserve the innocence of our children, we beseech you, St. Monica.

Protect them against the deceits of evil men, we beseech you, St. Monica.

Protect them from the dangers of bad example, we beseech you, St. Monica.

Watch over the movements of grace in their hearts;

Let the Christian virtues strike deep root in their hearts and bear much fruit,

Redouble your intercession for youth approaching manhood,

Obtain for all in mortal sin true contrition and perfect conversion,

Obtain for all mothers to fulfill their duties steadily and perseveringly,

Commend all mothers to the protection of the ever-blessed Virgin Mother of Our Lord,

Favorably incline the heart of your beloved son Augustine to the salvation of our children,

St. Augustine, holy son of a saintly mother, pray for us and for our children.

Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world, spare us, O Lord!

Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world, graciously hear us, O Lord!

Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us, O Lord!

V. Pray for us, O holy St. Monica,

R. That we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

Novena

Faithful God, Light of all hearts, we praise Thee for Saint Monica, woman of living faith and reconciling love. She nursed her son, Augustine, on the Name of Jesus, and urged him tirelessly to a Christian way of life. In answer to her prayers for his conversion Thou gavest her greater joy than all her tears had dared to ask. Hear our prayers: (here mention your request). As once Thou didst captivate the heart of St. Augustine, so now draw our hearts to Thee, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new. Amen.

Mother's Prayer For The Intercession Of St. Augustine

O God, Who enlightened St. Augustine by Thy grace and inflamed him with Thy love amid the darkness and miseries of a life of sin, have mercy likewise on my poor soul and upon those of my children and relatives! Pardon our ingratitude, our disobedience, our want of reverence, our indifference, and all the offenses of which we have ever been guilty against Thy holy Name.

We acknowledge that there is in this world no pain or punishment so severe as that which we deserve; therefore, full of dread of what is in store for us, we invoke the intercession of Thy holy servant Augustine, so inflamed with love of Thee!

O holy penitent Augustine, seraph of divine love, unspeakable miracle of divine mercy, obtain for us from God a true, perfect and heartfelt sorrow for our sins, a devout and constant love of God, a love that triumphs over all difficulties, temptations and tribulations, and a wise and unremitting fervor in the observance of the divine Commandments and the fulfillment of our duties.

Assist us especially in the training of our dear children. Their virtue and innocence are exposed to many dangers in the world! See how numerous are the snares and deceits prepared for the ruin of their souls by the flesh, and through the words and example of evil and worldly-minded men. If they do not receive extraordinary help, how can they withstand such allurements?

O great St. Augustine, take them under your protection! To our efforts in their behalf, join your intercession for them with God. Exert all your influence and, with the compassion of your loving heart, intercede with the Most Holy Trinity for them. Permit not that our children, sanctified in the waters of Baptism, should through mortal sin be banished from the presence of God and suffer eternal punishment.

Preserve them from the greatest of all evils here below, namely, that of denying the love of Jesus Christ through affection to some creature or the fear of some misfortune. Rather let them, and us their parents, die in the grace of God than live to offend Him mortally. This favor we implore through your intercession, O holy son of a sainted mother, you who gladly receive and graciously hear the prayers of a mother. I confidently hope that you have already heard my petitions, and that you will obtain for me a favorable answer from God. Amen.

Chaplet of St. Monica

This chaplet has a total of 55 beads: a loop of 5 decades with 4 separator beads and a pendant with a single bead, completed with a St. Monica medal.

Method of Prayer

On the Medal make the sign of the cross and ask St. Monica to intercede for you.  Mention your petition.

On the single bead say the Our Father, and:
O God, the Comforter of those who mourn and the Salvation of all who hope in You, Who did mercifully regard the loving tears of St. Monica by willing the conversion of Augustine, her son: grant us, that by their united intercession, grace to deplore our sins and so to find Your pardon and favor.
Through Christ Jesus Our Lord.  Amen.

Pray 10 Hail Mary's going counter-clockwise on the loop. (Traditionally the Rosary is prayed clockwise, but this is likely an Eastern European vs. Western European distinction)

On next separator recite Glory Be, and:
O God, the Comforter of the sorrowful and the salvation of them that put their trust in You, who so mercifully regarded the loving tears of St. Monica, in bringing about the conversion of her son Augustine:  grant that by their united intercession, we may grieve over our sins and attain grace and pardon from You.
Through Christ Our Lord.  Amen.
Pray 10 Hail Mary's

On next separator recite Glory Be and:
Almighty and eternal God, who, moved by the prayer of Your handmaid Monica, purified Your son, Augustine, at the holy font of Baptism: grant, we beseech You,  that by her patronage, whose solemn festivity we observe, we may be free from imminent evil.
Through Christ Our Lord.  Amen.
Pray 10 Hail Mary's

On next separator recite Glory Be and:
O holy Monica, by your burning tears and unceasing prayers, you did save your son from eternal damnation.  Obtain for us the grace ever to comprehend what is most conducive to the salvation of our children, so that we may effectively restrain them from the way of sin and lead them by that of virtue and piety to heaven!
Through Christ Our Lord. Amen
.
Pray 10 Hail Mary's

On next separator recite Glory Be and:
O holy Monica, by your patience and prayers, you did obtain from God the conversion of your husband and the grace to live in peace with him.  Obtain for us, we beseech you, the blessing of Almighty God, so that true harmony and confiding peace may reign also in our home, and that all the members of our families may attain eternal life.
Through Christ Our Lord.  Amen.
Pray 10 Hail Mary's

Conclude on single bead with Our Father then the OPTIONAL but recommended prayer written to St. Augustine :

Before Your eyes, O Lord, we bring our sins, and with them compare the stripes we have received.
If we weigh the evil we have done, we find what we suffer to be much less than we deserve.
What we have committed far outweighs what we endure.

We feel the punishment of sin, and yet we turn not from our willfulness in sinning.
Our weakness faints under Your scourges; but our perverseness is still the same.
Our diseased mind is racked with pain, and our neck is as stiff as ever.
Our life is spent in sighs and grief; but in our actions we are not reformed.

If You expect our amendment, we grow no better; if You take revenge, we are not able to subsist.
When we are chastised, we acknowledge what we have done; but when Your visitation is over, we forget what we have wept for.

If You stretch out Your hand, we promise duty; if You suspend Your sword, we keep not our promise.
If You strike, we cry for pardon; and if You pardon, we provoke You again to strike.
Here, O Lord, are criminals confessing their guilt; we know that unless You forgive You may justly destroy us.

Grant, without our merit, what we ask, O Almighty Father, who out of nothing did create us to ask You,
Through Christ Our Lord.  Amen
