Epitaphs

 

John Adams, son of Leonard & Ruby Lucina Fowle, died April 6, 1832, AEt. 9 years, 3 months & 24 days.

"Friends, nor physicians could not save, This lovely body from the grave;
Nor can the grave confine thee here, When Christ in judgement shall appear"

John Adams Fowle, son of Leonard and Ruby Lucinia (Adams) Fowle, born January 12, 1823.  Parents, both of Woburn, were married December 27, 1818.

Adrianah Eliza, daughter of Samuel and Eliza Colwell, died April 16, 1832, AEt. 4 years & 9 months.

"Lovely child, to heaven aspiring, There to chant thy Maker's praise;
All thy parents fondest wishes, Could not here prolong thy days;
Heavenly Father!  How mysterious are thy ways"

Adrianna Eliza Caldwell, daughter of Samuel and Eliza Ann (Sawyer) Caldwell, born August 22, 1827.


In Memory of two children of Mr. John C. & Mrs. Mary M. Brackett, who died of Scarlet Fever.  Sophronia S., died May 29, 1832, AEt. 4 years & 3 months; John C., died May 31, 1832, AEt. 1 year & 1 month.

"Farewell, dear babes, 'till the bright morning's rise,
Then may we hope to meet thee in the skies"

The parents, John C. Brackett, of Woburn, and Mary M. Smith, of Lexington, were married May 15, 1827.  He drove a stage to Boston, and kept a stable where Lyceum Hall now is; was later a prominent member of the Baptist Church, and representative to the General Court in 1845.

Erected in Memory of Mrs. Julia Ann, wife of Deacon John Tidd, who died June 4, 1832, in the 23d year of his age.

"She sleeps!  the vital spark is fled, The lovely form to dust is given!
The spirit dwells not with the dead, But freed has sought its rest in heaven.
Then, farewell, Julia, sweetly sleep!
Christ is they resurrection pledge, Friends o'er thy early grave may weep"

 Julia Ann (Claflin) Tidd, second wife of Deacon John Tidd.  Captain John Tidd, and Julia Claflin, both of Woburn, were married November 24, 1825.  She was born in Boston, and was daughter of Warner and Nancy Claflin.

This Stone is erected by a near Friend, To the Memory of Nancy Emeline, daughter of Lemuel & Nancy Richardson, who died July 2, 1832, AEt. 19 years.

"Where is the form so lately seen, All dressed in Nature's bloom;
Alas! and is she now become, A tenant of the tomb!
Yes, nothing but the mortal part, Is left on earth to stay, - 
The immortal spirit now is fled, To distant climes away.
Ye guardian Angels, hover round, This lovely spot of sacred ground;
Where my dear Nancy waiting lies, Till God shall bid her relicks rise"

Nancy Emeline Richardson, daughter of Lemuel and Nancy, born March 24, 1813.

In Memory of Mrs. Elizabeth, wife of Ruel Johnson, who died September 9, 1832, AEt. 38.

Elizabeth Johnson, wife of Ruel Johnson.  Ruel Johnson and Betsey Kendall, both of Woburn, married April 5, 1817.  Betsey Kendall, daughter of Obadiah, Jr. and Sarah Kendall, born August 10, 1794.

In Memory of William Wade, who died October 3, 1832, Aged 24 years.

"The path to Heaven leads through the grave, Elate with hope, he can rejoice;
To see death's summons come.  Praises employ his dying voice,

William Wade, born February 24, 1809, son of James and Mary.

In Memory of Mr. Job Miller, who died November 2, 1832, AEt. 82.

"The Memory of the just is blessed"

Job Miller, of Charlestown, married Sarah Gould, of Woburn.  Marriage intention dated January 13, 1776; he served in the Revolutionary War.

In Memory of Deacon Joseph Parker, who died January 10, 1833, AEt. 51.

"Blest is the man, whose tender care, Relieves the poor in their distress;
Whose pity wipes the widow's tear, Whose hands support the fatherless;
We hear thy groans with deep surprise, And view thy wounds with weeping eyes;
Each bleeding wound, each dying groan, With anguish filled and pains unknown"

Deacon Joseph Parker, Universalist deacon, son of Benjamin and Mehitabel, born June 8, 1782.

In Memory of Mr. Jonathan Tyler, who died February 13, 1833, AEt. 73.

"Farewell my father, fond and dear, Death has called and we must part;
Which has often caused our tears to flow"

Jonathan Tyler and Rhoda Bruce, married May 1, 1781, by Reverend J. Marrett.  He was the son of Moses and Eleanor, born June 14, 1760.

Erected In memory of Mr. Uri Beers, who died May 1, 1833, AEt. 34.

"If aught on earth would keep me here, It is my wife and children dear;
But Jesus calls and I must go, To dwell with him, and angels too;
O' that the sinner when he sees, These lines erected here by me;
Would think on eternity, and pray, Lord prepare me for that day!

Uri Beers; birth not on Woburn Record.  Uri Beers and Mary Knight, both of Woburn, married April 25, 1822.

In Memory of Mr. Ezra W. Reed, who died December 13, 1833, AEt. 43.

Ezra W. Reed, son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Wyman) Reed, married Fanny Fowle, October 27, 1814.  He was a blacksmith, with a shop near the site of the present Baptist church; later had a shop on the spot now occupied by the Municipal Building, and still later he was located at the corner of Pleasant and North Warren Streets.  The Probate Records refer to minor children, James (over 14 years of age) and Fanny F. (under 14 years of age).  His widow, Fanny, was appointed administratrix of his estate.

In memory of Mrs. Mary P. Reed, who died January 7, 1834, AEt. 40.

"Ah, can it be, and hast thou gone, And left us thus to grieve alone;
And is thy gentle spirit fled, And is my own dear Mother dead"

Joshua Reed and Mary Parker were married August 4, 1812.


Daniel Wyman, son of Mr. Oliver B. and Mrs. Almira W. Coolidge, died April 9, 1834, AEt. 4 months & 19 days.

"Like snow that falls upon a river, A moment white, then gone forever"

Daniel Wyman Coolidge, son of Oliver B. and Almira W. Coolidge, born November 21, 1833.

In memory of Mrs. Hannah, wife of Colonel Leonard Thompson, who was born March 17, 1790 & died April 17, 1834, AEt. 44.

"My dearest friends, weep not for me, I am relieved from pain;
My love to you on earth was strong, Yet death to me is gain"

Hannah (Wyman) Thompson, born and died as above stated, married Colonel Leonard Thompson, November 19, 1812; his first wife.  She was the daughter of Daniel and Hannah (Wright) Wyman.  Her husband married (2) Anna B. Mead, December 3, 1835; she died February 22, 1855, aged 51 years.  He is yet living (1874), one of the oldest citizens of Woburn.

Erected in memory of Mrs. Elizabeth Pollard, who died August 30, 1834, Aged 69.

"Behold, all you that do pass by, As you are now so once was I;
As I am now so you must be, Prepare for death and follow me"

Mrs. Pollard was Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel and Susanna (Swan) Watts, born October 9, 1762. (Woburn Records).  She lived in the house of John Fowle, 2d., her nephew, which stood then in the present yard of the First Congregational Church.  She had a son, who went to California, and a daughter, Elizabeth.


Amanda Frances, daughter of Thomas and Rhoda Pool, died October 21, 1834, AEt. 5 years.

"After a scene of sharp distress, Her weary body has repose'd to rest"

Amanda Frances Poole, daughter of Thomas, Jr., and Rhoda Poole, born October 17, 1829.  Thomas Poole, Jr., and Rhoda T. Nichols, both of Woburn, married April 15, 1828.


In Memory of Mrs. Abigail, wife of Mr. John Symmes, who died November 8, 1834, AEt. 38.

"My dearest friends, weep not for me,  But rejoice, I  am relieved from pain.
My love to you on earth was strong, But death to me is gain"
 

Abigail (Green) Symmes, first wife of John Symmes, of South Woburn, now Winchester, married July 25, 1816; she was of Boston, and born February 10, 1796.   Her husband, born May 19, 1786, was son of Samuel Symmes, and grandson of Zechariah and Judith (Eames) Symmes.  Her son, John Symmes, of Winchester (1873), is superintendent of the large pianoforte manufactory of Hallett, Cumston & Co., Boston.

Deacon John Fowle, died December 9, 1834, AEt. 79.  Mrs. Lois, wife of Deacon John Fowle, died February 2, 1840, AEt. 81.

Deacon John Fowle, son of Josiah and Margery, born November 10, 1755.  Lois Fowle, wife of Deacon John Fowle.  John Fowle, 3d., and Lois Richardson, both of Woburn, married October 18, 1780; daughter of Jesse and Jemima Richardson; born June 10, 1759.

Mr. Jeremy Weston, died February 1, 1835, AEt. 57.

Till God was pleased his breath to take, And ease him of his pain"

Jeremy Weston, son of Ephraim and Ruth (Richardson) Weston, born 1778.

In Memory of Mr. Jonas Caldwell, who died March 7, 1835, AEt. 27.

"This once loved form, now cold and dead, Each mournful thought employs;
His friend now mourns, her hopes are fled, And withered all her joys;
Receive, O earth, his faded form, In thy cold bosom let it lie;
Safe let it rest from every storm, Then may we meet to part no more"

Mr. Jonas Caldwell, son of John Caldwell, died at Burlington.

In Memory of Mr. Joshua Davis, 2d., who died April 27, 1835, AEt. 47.

Joshua Davis is said to have been "a Billerica man."  He married a Widow Sullivan, of Boston.  He kept the Mishawum House at one time.

"Mr. Richardson was a kind husband, a tender Father, 
 and a beloved member of the Church of Christ"

"Why should we mourn as in the Lord he sleeps, Or wish him back in sorrow's mournful night;
Immortal hope can smile while memory weeps, And trace his dwelling through a path of life."

"Then hush our grief, for o'er death's fearful gloom, The lamp of truth its holy radiance throws;
And hopes that glow in life's unfading bloom, Endear the stillness of his sweet repose."

George Richardson, son of Jacob and Ruth, born March 3, 1789.

In Memory of Mrs. Hannah, wife of Deacon Ebenezer Lawrence, who died suddenly, November 25, 1835, AEt. 75.

"An affectionate mother, an industrious wife, She worked with her hands all the days of her life;
She laid by her work, and went to repose, Slept all night in bed and never arose.
From her sudden fate, let the living now learn, What should be their first, their greatest concern;
Prepare, mortal, O prepare now to die, For here, shortly, very shortly, you too must die."

Hannah (Estabrooks) Lawrence, wife of Deacon Ebenezer Lawrence, married April 6, 1785; daughter of Benjamin and Hannah Estabrooks, of Lexington, and born January 20, 1760.

Mrs. Anna, wife of Mr. Samuel Richardson, died December 3, 1835, AEt. 81.

Anna, second wife of Samuel Richardson; she was born Anna Eustis, of Boston.  Marriage intention dated November 28, 1782.

In Memory of Mrs. Millycent, wife of Mr. Nathaniel Davis, who died December 7, 1835, AEt. 75.
In Memory of Mr. Nathaniel Davis, who died December 10, 1835, AEt. 76.

"Let this vain world engage no more; Behold the gaping tomb,
It bids us seize the present hour; Tomorrow, death may come."

Mellicent Davis, wife of Nathaniel Davis, was daughter of Ebenezer and Hannah (Estabrook) Hubbard, of Concord.  Nathaniel Davis was born in Concord, and kept store in Woburn.

In Memory of Mr. Elijah Leathe, who died December 13, 1835, AEt. 80.

"He trusted in Jehovah's word, To save the human race;
His spirit left its cumbrous load, To rest in God's embrace."

Elijah Leathe, son of Elijah and Mary, born August 12, 1755.

In Memory of Joseph Lawrence, Esq'r., who died February 8, 1836, AEt. 81.

"O death! The poor man's dearest friend, The kindest and the best;
Welcome the hour my aged limbs, Are laid with thee at rest;
The great, the wealthy, fear thy blow, From pomp and pleasure torn;
But Oh! A blest relief to those, That weary-laden mourn."

Joseph Lawrence, Esquire, born November 12, 1754, in Woburn; son of Jonathan and Rachel (Wright) Lawrence; did service in Revolutionary War previous to 1777; styled Lieutenant in 1800; also in 1799; treasurer of Woburn in 1800, 1801.  May 26, 1793, he was admitted to membership in Woburn First Church.  A silver cup was "The gift of Joseph Lawrence, Esqr., to the First Church of Christ in Woburn, 1822.


Deacon Benjamin Wyman, died February 25, 1836, AEt. 68.

"Sleep on in peace! Ye relics, sacred, lie! The resurrection morn when God shall you restore,
And as in humble, holy hope ye now repose; Then he in beauty you shall clothe,
And fadeless as is his own bright crown; Forever make you like a star,
To shine in heaven's unclouded skies above."

Benjamin Wyman, son of Benjamin and Elizabeth, born August 8, 1767.  He was deacon of the First Church, an esquire, a major, etc., and was a man of great influence in Woburn affairs.

In Memory of Mr. Benjamin J. Fowle, who died March 20, 1836, AEt. 20 years.

Benjamin J. Fowle, son of Benjamin and Mary (Fowle) Fowle.  Benjamin J. Fowle had brothers: William, born March 29, 1818 and Luther A., born January 13, 1821.

Mary D., Wife of Deacon Samuel Tidd, Died March 21, 1836, AEt. 47.

"When the last trump shall wake the slumbering dead, Commanding dust, re-inanimate, to rise;
Then joyful may'st thou leave thy lowly bed, To meet thy Saviour in the rapturous skies."

Mary D. Tidd, wife of Deacon Samuel Tidd, was daughter of Thaddeus and Sarah (Stearns) Davis, of Bedford, and was born in Bedford, April 2, 1789.  Samuel Tidd and Mary Davis were married December 26, 1809.

Mr. Charles Wyman, died March 29, 1836, AEt. 44.

"Of modest manners, unaffected mind, Lover of truth, and friend to human kind;
Go and exalt thy moral to divine, Go live for Heaven's eternal year is thine.
Yes happy spirit cheerful go, And with thy Saviour be;
And thy lov'd ones that mourn below, Ere long will come to thee."

Charles Wyman, son of Samuel Eames Wyman and Anna, born October 10, 1791.


Albert, son of Albert Thompson.

Albert, son of Albert and Serviah B. (Nichols) Thompson; born August 22, 1835; died September 13, 1836.  Albert Thompson, born May 19, 1841; died August 29, 1841; parents were married April 22, 1834; grandchildren of Jonathan Thompson.

Mrs. Abigail J., wife of Sumner Richardson, died September 13, 1836, Aged 26 years.

"My dearest friend, and hast thou gone? Thy body to the dust?
The purer, nobler part of thee, To dwell among the just;
Oh, thou blest Saint, I'll not repine,
But may my closing breath;
Repeat these dying words of thine--- Bles't Saviour, take me thro' the vale of death."

Abigail J. Dale, of Boston, married Sumner Richardson, April 19, 1836.  She was the sister of his brother Thomas's wife.


Frances Locke, daughter of Jeduthun and Louisa Fowle, died October 5th, 1836, AEt. 11 months.

Mrs. Almira, wife of Abel Pierce, died October 15, 1836, AEt. 32.

"Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord"

Almira, wife of Abel Pierce, of Arlington.  She was the daughter of Josiah Harrington Russell and Sarah (Hutchinson) Russell, and baptized at Arlington, March 24, 1805; married Abel Pierce, of Charlestown, April 4, 1822.

In Memory of Susan W., daughter of George & Nancy Richardson, who died November 4, 1836, AEt. 18.

In Memory of Miss Submit B. Thompson, who died November 7, 1836, Aged 21 years.

In Memory of Captain Jonathan Thompson, A Soldier of the American Revolution.  Born April 26, 1760, Died November 21, 1836.

Captain Jonathan Thompson, born and died as above stated, aged 76 years and 6 months; married Mary Richardson, August 9, 1781, who died May 1, 1854, aged 90 years.  He was the son of Samuel, Esquire and Abigail (Tidd) Thompson.

In Memory of Mr. Jesse Richardson, who died February 12, 1837, Aged 75 years.  
In Memory of Mrs. Submit, wife of Mr. Jesse Richardson, who died July 8, 1836, Aged 73 years.

"Though cold in dust these perished hearts may lie, 
The spark that warmed them once can never die;
That shall resist the triumphs of decay,
When time is o'er and worlds have passed away."

Jesse Richardson, son of Zachariah and Phebe, born August 20, 1761.  Submit Brown, a sister of Captain Joseph Brown, married Jesse Richardson; marriage intention dated November 24, 1781.

Franklin Pierce, died February 20, 1837, AEt. 35.

"Stop, my friend, and drop a tear, Think on the dust that slumbers here."

In Memory of Mrs. Louisar R., wife of Mr. Tracey C. Nichols, who died April 20, 1837, AEt. 31.

"Her song of sorrow now hath ceased, Mute is her voice and cold her hand;
Her broken spirit God appeased, And called her to the better land."

Louisa R. Kimball and Tracy C. Nichols were married May 7, 1826.  She was the daughter of Ezra Kimball.

In Memory of Mr. John Buxton, who died April 27, 1837, AEt. 84.

John Buxton, born in North Reading, was a shoemaker.  He married Elizabeth Parker.  They had issue: (1) John, born in Reading, died in Woburn; (2) Betsey, married Elisha Davis, and died March 31, 1854, aged 74; (3) Hannah, married Benjamin F. Roberts, died March 29, 1819, aged 30; (4) Polly, born in North Woburn, October 25, 1794, died April 22, 1874, aged 79; she was the wife of Sewall Richardson, and was married June 18, 1828; (5) Infant Son, died young.


Sacred to the Memory of Mrs. Grace Ann, wife of Alfred M. Badger, who died May 21, 1837, AEt. 24.

"Farewell, my friends & Kindred dear, I leave this world of pain;
May virtue be your practice here, 'Till we shall meet again.
My dying hour has softly come, My cares, my sorrows, now are o'er;
Rise now, my soul, to bliss above, And ever sing they Saviour's love."

Alfred M. Badger is said to have lived in Montvale, in house now owned by Mr. Sewall Samson.

Mr. Amos H. Burgess, died August 17, 1837, AEt. 33.
Jacob Henry, died September 10, 1836, 1 year.
Mary Henrietta, died February 14, 1839, AEt. 22 months.

Children of Amos H. & Mary A. Burgess 

According to Woburn Records, Mr. Amos H. Burgess, of Woburn, and Miss Mary Ann Shattuck, of West Cambridge, were married October 1, 1834.  The Shattuck Memorial gives her name as Mary Jane, and the marriage as occurring October 1, 1833.  It says that Jacob Henry was born September 13, 1834, and died September 10, 1835;  Mary Henrietta, born March 28, 1837, died February 13, 1839.  Amos H. Burgess is spoken of as being of West Cambridge.  He died August 17, 1837.

Edward Richardson, son of Edward and Jerusha, born in Reading, August 25, 1743, married October 6, 1763, Sarah Tidd.  Job Richardson was a son.

In Memory of Nancy E. Dale, who died November 27, 1837, AEt. 21 years.

Nancy E. Dale, probably born in Milford, New Hampshire, was a sister of Abigail J. Richardson.

Abigail Kendall, widow of Abijah Kendall, late of Templeton, Mass., was daughter of Jacob and Abigail Pierce; born April 16, 1753.

Mr. Moses Winn, died April 16, 1838, AEt. 58.

Moses Winn, son of Jeremiah and Mehitable (Buck) Winn, was born March 17, 1780.  He was a Lieutenant 1814-1816, per Town Records.  His wife, Sally, died 1807.

Jeremiah Convers, Jr., died May 7, 1838, AE. 38 years.

Jeremiah Converse, Jr., son of Jeremiah and Jerusha, born June 28, 1795.  He married sisters, Sally and Clarissa Barnard, and was captain the Washington Light Infantry.  He died in 1833 (Town Records)

Mr. John Buxton, Jr., died September 27, 1840, in his 63rd year.

John Buxton, son of John Buxton, was born in Reading.  He was a shoemaker.  His wife died in 1830.  They had issue: (1) John, born July 29, 1803, in Wilmington; married Mary Damon, of Reading, May 22, 1843, and died March 18, 1854; (2) Sarah, born August 20, 1805, died February 6, 1863, unmarried; (3) Elizabeth, born November 30, 1814, married Edmund Buxton, of England.  She still (1890) living.

Ebenezer French, the father, died in 1861.  He was born in Alton, New Hampshire.


Daniel H. Skelton, died March 12, 1841, AEt. 23 years.

"There is rest in Heaven"

In his will, Daniel H. Skelton refers to his sister, Catharine Emma Jewett, wife of David W. Jewett, and refers to his mother, Emma Skelton, a widow.  He also speaks of his uncle, Matthew Skelton, of Charlestown.  One of the witnesses to his will was "Vashti Joslin."

Benjamin Fowle, son of Benjamin and Mary (Wyman) Fowle.  Benjamin Fowle, born October 21, 1746, died November 9, 1815, married, first, Mary Bruce, September 4, 1774; second, Mary Wyman, July 26, 1781.  They had issue: (1) Mary, born December 12, 1774, died October 28, 1775; (2) Augustus, married Susanna Brown, 1805; (3) Benjamin, married Mary Fowle, February 21, 1815, and died April 18, 1841; (4) Jonathan W., died May 1, 1821; (5) Mary, married Junius Richardson, 1818.

Priscilla Weston, wife of Jeremy Weston, was daughter of _____Perkins, and was probably born in Ipswich.  Jeremy Weston after his marriage, lived first in West Cambridge (Now Belmont), and he died in the old brick house on the Lexington Road, known as the Rogers Place.

Deacon Ebenezer Lawrence, born October 16, 1757, in Woburn, son of Jonathan and Rachel (Wright) Lawrence; married Hannah Estabrooks; died 1835; was a soldier in the Revolutionary War; lived in Woburn where the Lawrence School house now stands.  May 27, 1798, Ebenezer Lawrence and Hannah Lawrence, his wife, were admitted members of Woburn First Church.  From July 2, 1812, to May 2, 1828, he held the office of deacon in that church.

Lucy Barnard, wife of Simon, was a daughter of Nathan and Bathsheba (Hayward-Simonds) Simonds, and was born September 27, 1796.  Her husband was a native of Maine.  Her brother, Nathan Simonds, while a student at Harvard, was drowned in Fresh Pond.

Mrs. Mellicent Lawrence, wife of Mr. Jacob Pierce, died November 1, 1842, AEt. 46.

Mellicent (Lawrence) Pierce, wife of Jacob, daughter of Ebenezer and Hannah Lawrence, born May 17, 1796.  Mr. Jacob Pierce, Jr., and Miss Mellicent Lawrence married September 26, 1816.

Mrs. Sarah, widow of Mr. Obadiah Kendall, died January 23, 1843, AEt. 81.

John Kendall, son of John and Sarah, born December 5, 1758.  Elizabeth Kendall, wife of John, was born Elizabeth Barnard, and is said to have come from Maine.  She was an aunt of Simon Barnard.  This stone to Elizabeth Kendall is not now (1890) in the yard.


Emma Dow, daughter of Hial P. & Mary G. D. Cram, died September 7, 1843, AEt. 1 year, 4 months & 10 days.

Emma Dow Cram was born in Weare, New Hampshire.


In Memory of Samuel Cutter, who died November 3d, 1843, AEt. 59.

Samuel Cutter, born September 7, 1785, son of James and Catherine (Benjamin) Cutter.  His father was a native of Menotomy (now Arlington), but died in Jaffrey, New Hampshire.  This stone has been removed to the cemetery on Salem Street. (Woodbrook)

Stephen Skinner, a son of Abraham and Sally (Johnson) Skinner, says that he was born in Woburn, June 24, 1818, and that his father, Abraham, was also, although their births are not on the records.  He says his mother was a daughter of John Johnson, and she was born in Leicester or Andover.  His grandfather, Abraham, married twice, and each wife was a Brooks.  He himself was born in the old Brooks house, at the corner of Main Street and Lake Avenue.

Samuel Gardner, of Charlestown, and Widow Catherine Richardson of Woburn, were married May 26, 1799.  She died in 1842.  The locality of his residence was, first, in the limits of Charlestown; next, in West Cambridge (now Arlington); and lastly, in Winchester.  He was born March 4, 1770; son of Henry and Dorothy.
