Ballard Family History

by: Fay Hunting Bennett

Jeremiah, Joseph's twelfth child (his first by his second wife) was born in Andover March 29, 1697. He married Mary Dane December 29, 1721. Mary Dane was born in Andover about 1700, the daughter of Francis Dane and Hannah Poor.

Jeremiah sold the old family place at Andover in l735, to his brother-in-law Joseph Gibson and moved to Lunenburg, then to Lancaster, then to Concord, where he was living in 1743. At the outbreak of the war with France in 1744, he entered the military service, serving first as sergeant and then as Captain. In 1745 he was in command of a company engaged in protecting the frontiers of Maine, and his manuscript orders signed by Governor Shirley are still in existence. In 1749 he moved west to New Salem, Franklin County, at the foot of the Berkshires.

He became one of the most prominent settlers of that town. In 1738 he was Captain in Colonel Joseph William's Regiment. In 1750 Jeremiah Ballard and Jeremiah Meacham were granted a license to erect a sawmill upon the land belonging to them. This mill was built in the east part of the township, upon the middle branch of Swift River, near the locality called Buffalo.

Many papers relating to his activities are on file. Jeremiah had six children: Mary, Phebe, Jeremiah, Daniel, Joshua and Joseph. He died in New Salem in 1761. His resting-place is not marked, but the location is believed to be on the site now occupied by the old school.
